The North Korean tabloid Chosun Ibo also speculated that beer has been in works since at least 2015, after that the leader of the country, Kim Jong-un, complained that beers imported from South Korea are too bland.

He will also hold talks with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Minister of Finance Taro Aso and will address USA troops at Yokota Air Base near Tokyo before flying to South Korea on Thursday.

"A message was being sent", one official said of the talking point.

The vice president's trip will be highlighted by his stop at the Pyeongchang Games.

Pence's comments echoed those made by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson who has also suggested a willingness to engage with North Korea around the Olympics.

The country's leadership is apparently trying to show people in North Korea and the rest of the world that it is working to improve ties with the South.

"We'll see what happens", Tillerson said Monday while traveling in Peru when asked if the administration would accept an invitation from North Korean officials to meet in South Korea. He touted the coming deployment of an additional 20 ground-based interceptors that would respond to an enemy launch.

Vice President Mike Pence arrived in Japan late Tuesday en route to the games where he will lead a delegation to the opening ceremony, along with the top USA general in South Korea and more diplomatic and military officials.

Speaking during the flight to Japan, Pence said he had not sought talks with North Korean officials at the Games but left open the possibility.

"If Trump does not get rid of his anachronistic and dogmatic way of thinking, it will only bring about the effect of further endangering security and future of the United States", the government said in comments carried by the North's official Korean Central News Agency.

In Geneva, the United States said on Tuesday that North Korea may be only months away from being able to strike the United States with a nuclear-tipped ballistic missile, while North Korea said Washington was considering a pre-emptive strike.

More recently, Trump has softened his approach, telling South Korean President Moon Jae-in on a recent phone call of "his openness to holding talks between the US and North Korea at the appropriate time, under the right circumstances", according to the White House.
