McDonald's Planning Big Change for Happy Meals

For global restaurants, McDonald's Corp. said that at least half of the Happy Meal options available must meet its new nutritional guidelines. But they aren't exactly going to turn unhealthy kids healthy. McDonald's wants to get Happy Meals 600 calories or less.

The iconic meals typically feature a hamburger, cheeseburger or chicken nuggets as the main course; a side item like fries or fruit, a drink; and the ever-popular small toy or trinket. The Cheeseburger will only be available at a customer's request.

McDonald's also announced that small French fries will be replaced by a kids' sized serving, and that bottled water will soon be added as a featured Happy Meal beverage.

Chocolate milk is also off the menu.

Chocolate milk will no longer be listed on the Happy Meal menu, but will still be available at a customer's request.

Today, we applaud McDonald's leadership in offering healthier kids' meals that will considerably increase consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, water and low-fat dairy for millions of families globally. On Thursday, the chain said many of those markets are ahead of schedule in their progress on those efforts.

"This will be our North Star in nutrition", said Braun, adding it's their first time establishing specific goals for one of their top selling meal combos.

The changes are part of an initiative to reduce the amount of calories in Happy Meals to 600 or less by June of this year, with at least half of stores and drive-throughs meeting that target by 2022.

McDonald's is about to change everything you know about the Happy Meal.

You can actually still order them in Happy Meals if you ask the server.

The menu change only applies to the USA for now.

Currently, 28 percent of Happy Meal combinations offered in 20 markets meet these nutrition criterion, McDonald's says.

In January, Italy McDonalds introduced a new Happy Meal entrée called the “Junior Chicken, ” a lean grilled chicken sandwich.

The American Heart Association hopes that McDonald's competitors will follow in their steps, according to a CNN report.

Panera Bread, which has called on chains including McDonald's to offer better kids' meals, applauded the moves.
