Pistons sending Willie Reed to Bulls for Jameer Nelson

Pistons sending Willie Reed to Bulls for Jameer Nelson

Detroit acquired 13-year National Basketball Association veteran guard Jameer Nelson from the Chicago Bulls for centre Willis Reed.

Adding Nelson, who's reunited with Stan Van Gundy after serving as his starting point guard during Van Gundy's time with the Orlando Magic, looks mostly like an insurance move for Detroit.

The 6-foot-7 Ennis has averaged 6.9 points in 45 games this season. After the Blake Griffin trade thinned out the Pistons' wing rotation, Galloway is more important there, so there was some need for a steadier hand at the point.

Per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Pistons are sending Brice Johnson and a second-round pick to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for small forward James Ennis. Hours after making the trade, the Bulls waived the 27-year-old Reed.

During Reggie Jackson's absence with a severely sprained ankle, which has made Ish Smith a starter, Van Gundy has struggled to settle on a backup point guard. In 871 career games, he's averaging 11.4 points per game and 5.1 assists per game.

His role in Detroit Pistons is going to be very similar, because of Pistons All-Star center Andre Drummond who is very similar in athleticism to Dwight Howard and is a great rim protector. He's served one of his six games so far. The Pistons will have just their mid-level exception and no bi-annual exception or other ways of adding talent other than simply re-signing their own players, so acquiring Ennis with the intention of retaining his services for future seasons is effectively the equivalent of doing their free agency shopping months in advance.

In giving up Tobias Harris, Avery Bradley and Boban Marjanovic, along with two draft picks, the Pistons also gave up much of their depth. The 23-year-old Johnson was a first-round pick by the Clipper In 2016 out of North Carolina University.
