Winter Games Highlight Different Strategies on North Korea for US, South Korea

They have been dubbed the "army of beauties", apparently handpicked for their looks by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un himself.

Meanwhile, Vice President Pence arrived in South Korea and met with President Moon Jae In and called on him to pursue a more hawkish approach to his belligerent neighbor across the border and ignore its "propaganda".

Moon has supported USA -led sanctions against the North, but he has repeatedly called for dialogue.

It remained unclear whether Kim would be carrying a message from her brother to Moon, who has said he is willing to meet Kim Jong Un if he is reasonably sure that such a meeting would help end the crisis over the North's nuclear weapons and missile development.

At the same time, the vice president has deliberately left the door open to a possible encounter with North Korean officials expected to be in attendance.

Guided by the consensus of the two leaders, China is willing to work with South Korea to insist on mutual respect and support, fully embark on communication and dialogue at all levels, further stimulate exchanges and cooperation, properly handle sensitive issues, and increase mutual understanding and trust, in order to push for constant progress in bilateral relations, Han told Moon.

US Vice President Mike Pence was due in the South later Thursday and is also scheduled to attend the opening ceremony in Pyeongchang on Friday.

A North Korean official says that Pyongyang has no desire to engage in talks with the United States on the sidelines of the Winter Olympics, despite South Korean President Moon Jae-in's recent push to promote dialogue between Pyongyang and Washington. Whatever sanctions are planned, however, those who value American independence and sovereignty will hope that they are implemented unilaterally, and not by means of the United Nations or one of its affiliated agencies.

On the eve of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games, the USA and South Korea vowed to work in tandem towards denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, but delivered messages suggesting very different approaches in dealing with the threat of North Korea and its weapons development program.

Moon will have lunch with the high-level delegation, a spokesman told reporter.

Following the launch from a site north of the capital, North Korean state media announced the November test was a success.

"Not everyone gets to see it", said Kim Mi-sook, who came to the concert with her husband.

North Korea is under multiple sets of UN Security Council sanctions over its banned nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programmes, which have seen it develop rockets theoretically capable of reaching the USA mainland.

"We must ensure that no invaders can infringe upon our dignity and independence", Kim said in a speech delivered from the podium overlooking the parade.

5 of 9 Hwasong-12 and Hwasong-14 missiles are displayed during a military parade held in Pyongyang, North Korea, on February 8, 2018.

The North unveiled five new kinds of missiles at its most recent major military parade last April.

Some analysts in the South said that the North might have decided not to ruffle too many feathers as its athletes and officials were overseas.
