WTN: Nittany Lions Open Big Ten Play

The Lions were not immune to strikeouts at the plate themselves though, as Elon starter RHP George Kirby (0-1) struck out 11 in five innings, allowing one run on two hits and three walks, while RHP Brandon Justice recorded five over the last 3 2/3 innings. And then, during Saturday's practice, one more from its starting lineup. The Nittany Lions led 36-32 at the half against the Boilermakers, ranked No. 6 at the time, but Penn State had no answer for sophomore Carsen Edwards and his game-high 27 points.

Although the Nittany Lions' offense went completely cold, Purdue did not run away with the game due to a spectacular effort by Penn State's defense.

But with one Edwards out, the other one stepped up for Purdue. He is a potential first team All-Big Ten Conference selection and a candidate nationally for both the Naismith and Wooden awards. And Isaac Haas added 12.

Even in a 76-73 defeat last night at Purdue that went down to the last shot, the Lions fought like champions. "It's the football mentality".

In sheer numbers, the purity of the rivalry between the sports teams of the Land-Grant institutions of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the state of OH couldn't be more competitive. "Especially when you win". I think today, for 40 minutes, everybody stepped up. Tony Carr led Penn State's team in scoring with 19 points, while shooting 36.4% from the field (making 8 of 22 attempts). He finished with 13 points in the first half on 5-for-10 shooting. And Lamar Stevens added 13.

Every coach preaches the mantra of "being ready when your time comes", and for Purdue junior forward Grady Eifert that meant Sunday. Freshman guard Nojel Eastern has also played brief minutes at the "4" when needed.

The Nittany Lions came into the game fresh off their biggest win of the season.

While the result was different, success didn't come all at once. Defensively, Purdue yields 64.0 points per game against the opposing teams. That malaise continued into the first half Sunday.

Purdue will travel to Illinois Thursday at 7 p.m. (FS1).

The Nittany Lions loaded the bases in the top of the first inning using two walks and the first hit in Duke Softball Stadium history from Polk, but all three runners were left stranded.

"The reality is we have to compensate people consistent with the expectations and their performance", said Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith. "We just got to keep getting better".

Carsen Edwards finally broke the slump with just over four minutes left in the first half to cut the deficit. The defense forced Penn State into 15 turnovers, many of which led to points for the offense. Moore finished 3 for 3 from the field for six points in 14 minutes. The 6-foot-1 guard scored in double figures for the 12th straight game.

Ryan Cline's 3-pointer with 5:31 remaining in regulation gave Purdue a 61-58 lead and they would never trail after that.

These days, the Penn State vs. Ohio State rivalry is as good it gets.

Their 79-56 pounding of Ohio State last week before #10.9k fans in the BJC just provided the latest exclamation point. Carr drove to the hoop and missed a runner.
