Brother of Pakistan's ousted PM becomes head of ruling party

The plea was filed today after Nawaz Sharif was disqualified as president of PML-N as a three member-bench of the apex court ruled that a disqualified premier could not retain office of a political party.

The party's meeting also approved the appointment of Nawaz Sharif as its leader for life.

However, in a tweet, Maryam Nawaz, daughter of the former prime minister, announced: "PMLN elects Nawaz Sharif as its QUAID for life". Climate Change Minister and PML-N's information secretary Mushahidullah Khan told reporters on Monday that the election of an interim president of the PML-N was the top agenda item for the CWC meeting.

PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Maryam Nawaz, Hamza Shehbaz Sharif, Punjab Governor Rafiq Rajwan, Tallal Chaudhry, Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique and other leaders of the party unanimously expressed confidence over the decision of the Nawaz Sharif. "Shahbaz will continue as the party's full-time president after the general council elects him in a meeting in Islamabad next month", he said.

The Central Working Committee of the PML-N met in Lahore to elect Shehbaz Sharif as party's acting president. Then the party's general council is required to elect a president within 45 days.

He was first elected as the PML-N president during exile in 2002, due to the registration of cases against Nawaz.

After becoming the party president, Shahbaz praised his elder brother for making the PML-N the country's most popular political force. However, going by the leadership qualities of Mian Shahbaz Sharif and the unprecedented developmental activities as well as reforms carried out by him in the province are likely to make a big difference in the next election.

He said the PML-N can never forget or ignore his efforts.

Nawaz was disqualified as the prime minister by the apex court in the Panama Papers case in July a year ago under Article 62 for failing to declare a receivable salary as an asset. For rendering such a role, a party head must necessarily possess the qualifications and be free of the disqualifications contemplated in Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution.
