Claire Foy was paid less than Matt Smith for The Crown

Queen Elizabeth, 91, has a net worth of around $520 million, according to Wealth-X, a wealth insights firm, thanks to profits, real estate and collections that come from the Crown Estate and the Duke of Lancaster.

The Crown, Netflix's sumptuous, historically-based period piece starring Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II, moves at roughly the pace of a state dinner, and every so often, Matt Smith's Prince Philip whines to his wife about the diminished sense of importance he feels playing second banana to the sovereign. Claire, 33, famously played a young Queen Elizabeth on the series - a role for which she won a Best Actress Golden Globe - while Matt, 35, portrayed the Queen's longtime husband, Prince Philip.

"The producers acknowledged that [Smith] did make more due to his Doctor Who fame, but that they would rectify that for the future", Variety reported.

"Going forward, no-one gets paid more than the queen", Variety quoted Ms Mackie as saying. The period drama's unusual structure calls for an entirely different set of actors every two seasons.

Good! Though not the best timing for Foy - as The Crown is recasting nearly its entire lineup of actors for seasons three and four, which take place in a later decade. "Broadchurch" alum Olivia Coleman will play the queen, and Smith's replacement has yet to be named. Helena Bonham Carter takes over for Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret as new characters - including Princess Diana - will be introduced.

"Seasons three and four will be the test of whether the show really has the legs to survive", said producer Andy Harries, CEO of Left Bank Pictures. "It's daunting but exciting and I hope it'll keep the series fresh and really of interest to people". She was nominated for an Emmy for her role in 2017.

This isn't the first time a woman has been paid less than a lower-billed actor. "You'll forget all about me and the rest of the cast".
