Palm Sunday begins holy week in lead up to Easter

Churches were crowded on Sunday and at many places traffic was stopped as devotees with tender leaves of coconut tree in hands took to the streets to commemorate Christ's entry into Jerusalem, when palm branches were placed in his path.

With incense, prayer and palms, parishioners and clergy at Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul in Philadelphia joined Christians throughout the world Sunday in celebrating the start of the holiest week on the Christian calendar. The Bishop will be at St. Mary of the Visitation Church, located at 110 Military St., on Wednesday, March 28 for the Mass of the Holy Oils starting at 6:30 p.m. "Live or try to live as Jesus Christ. To set us free to live a new life - to live for God and for the love of our neighbors and families".

Easter Sunday April 1: Mass at 8 a.m., 10 a.m., 12 noon. The palms, which represent the palms the crowd brought when Jesus rode into Jerusalem, will then be carried by the faithful as they process into the cathedral, a Christian tradition since the fourth century.

A highlight of the Palm Sunday service at Immaculate conception was a procession and the blessing of the palms.
