Zidane: We didn't deserve to lose

Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane has insisted that his side's 1-0 defeat against Espanyol at the Cornella-El Prat was undeserved.

Espanyol's 1-0 victory with a 93rd minute goal was the Catalan outfit's first over the Madrid side in 11 years.

Madrid stayed seven points behind second-place Atletico and 14 points behind leader Barcelona. "We played really well in the first-half but couldn't score".

Gareth Bale, Marco Asensio and Isco all struggled, the trio squandering the chance to impress ahead of next week's Champions League second leg with Paris Saint-Germain.

REAL MADRID appeared to have turned the corner in 2018, having seemingly looked on course to miss out on Champions League qualification following a a shocking start to the season.

Madrid hosts Getafe in the Spanish league on Saturday in its final game before the match in Paris.

Madrid had outscored opponents 20-7 in their five-game winning streak.

Although key players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos were rested for the game, the reigning champions were stunned by a Gerard Moreno's injury-time volley. And with La Liga lost long ago, Madrid lacked the urgency and the spark to dig out a win they would surely have managed last term. "The 1-0 is undeserved, but this is football".

Espanyol had never beaten Madrid at RCDE Stadium, where it began playing in 2009.

In the 30th minute, Gerard Moreno got a chance for Espanyol to punish Zidane's men on a counter-attack, but goalkeeper Keylor Navas made a timely interception to avert the danger.

Moreno's late strike was perhaps harsh on Zidane's side, but Espanyol were excellent and also saw a perfectly good goal ruled out earlier on in the evening. We have to focus on the games and try to win them because that's what this badge demands of us. It's a defeat that hurts and it's a poor result.

Fourth-placed Valencia could overtake Real with a win at Athletic Bilbao last night.
