Asaram rape case verdict today, security tightened in several states

Jodhpur (Rajasthan), Apr 25 (ANI): The Jodhpur Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribe Court will pronounce its verdict on Asaram rape case on Wednesday.

In view of the upcoming verdict as well as the massive following of Asaram who runs 400 ashrams across India, security has been boosted in Jodhpur, as well as other parts of Rajasthan and in Uttar Pradesh where the rape survivor lives.

Meanwhile, Asaram's spokesperson Neelam Dubey said they will talk to their legal team and decide future course of action. "Every vehicle is being checked for weapons and sadhaks coming to the city". "Delhi police is alert and is in touch with concerned states". Two sexual assault cases were filed against Asaram in Rajasthan and Gujarat. As per Police officials, Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) also have been implemented which prevent the assembly of people at an area.

A day ahead of the judgement, adequate security arrangements was put into place outside the victim's house.

Ahead of the verdict, a supporter of Asaram was detained outside the Jodhpur Central Jail where prohibitory orders have been clamped. We have confidence in our judiciary. "We have full respect for the courts".

In December 2014, the brother of the victim was threatened by Asaram's followers that if he did not settle the on-going case, then the lives of the family would be placed at risk. He's applied for bail at least on seven occasions with court rejecting all his pleas.

Devotees of another self-styled Hindu guru, who was jailed in 2017 for 20 years for rape, went on a rampage that lasted days and left 38 dead.

Asaram, who is described as on his website as "spiritual revolutionist" and a "great teacher", is one of India's best known spiritual gurus. "That was the trigger point for our investigation that followed", recalled Lamba, who is presently posted with the Anti-Corruption Bureau. Asaram had been in the Jodhpur central jail since 2013 after he was arrested on charges of raping the minor girl. She had accused him of raping her at his Jodhpur ashram in August that year. Asaram Bapu also tried to resist his arrest citing ill health and death of a relative. Two of four co-accused have also been convicted, according to media reports citing police sources, but there was confusion about the names.

Modi has since defended the actions of his government, and described the issue of sexual violence as "a matter of great concern for the country". Apart from this case, he faces another rape case in the neighboring state of Gujarat.

The woman, now 21, accused Asaram of assaulting her on the pretext of driving away evil forces.

On July 8 in 2015, a witness, Sudha Pathan turned hostile and told the court that she had no knowledge about Asaram's activities. Adding that "It takes two sides to make a mistake".
