Ford Pulls All But Two Car Models In US Market

You've probably heard by now: Ford is, for the most part, getting out of the vehicle business. By 2020, Ford plans to make 90 per cent of its lineup CUVs, SUVs, trucks, and commercial vehicles.

In a turning tide of events witnessed across the automotive sector, the Ford Motor Company has sketched a plan for cutting operational costs & augmenting its revenue by halting the sale of sedans in North America. The remaining Ford auto portfolio will feature the Mustang and an all-new Focus Active crossover coming out next year, neither of which will be built at the Chicago plant.

Going forward, the company will focus on trucks and SUVs.

“Were starting to understand what we need to do and making clear decisions there, ” Hackett said. "If appropriate returns are not on the horizon, we will shift that capital to where we can play and win". Ford said this is the future, and it means a total refresh of the existing lineup of SUVs and crossovers.

The announcement, buried in the company's first quarter earnings, confirms recent speculation that stalwarts such as the Ford Fusion and Taurus are dying off.

The Focus Active is one of the family of redesigned 2020 Focus models Ford unveiled this month.

Ford is hedging its bets on the fuel front by adding "hybrid-electric powertrains to high-volume, profitable vehicles like the F-150, Mustang, Explorer, Escape and Bronco". Ford made $119 million from its European business, and lost money in South America, Middle East and Africa and Asia Pacific.

The cuts are aimed at kick-starting a turnaround effort nearly one year after Ford's board ousted its chief executive officer. It identified Lincoln as a low-performing area but Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks said Wednesday that sales are growing and the brand is not in jeopardy. A spokesman for Ford confirmed that the Focus BEV will not return for another generation.

The company is also reviving two of its historic vehicles: the Ranger pickup, which will return in 2019, and the Bronco SUV, which will return to the US market in 2020. Its margin in North America fell to 7.8 percent from 8.9 percent. The 2019 Ford EcoSport was rated by the EPA at 27 mpg city, 29 highway, 28 combined in its most efficient powertrain configuration: front-wheel drive and a 1.0-liter turbo-3. "Younger generations are coming up and i don't see them wanting to drive my car" says Dottie Myers, as she waits for her vehicle to be repaired.
