It's Equal Pay Day!

It's Equal Pay Day!

For a more detailed picture of the gender pay gap, the American Association of University Women has produced a report "The Simple Truth".

Not all states have the same pay gap; some actually pay women less than others. It took until now for the average woman to make what the average man already raked in by the end of 2017. In past years, some businesses have offered discounts to women patrons.

According the Equality Act, all United Kingdom employers with 250 or more employees must submit facts about the salary and bonuses they paid to employees, including the proportions of men and women who receive bonuses and the proportions of each sex in each quartile pay band.

"Given managers on average earn two times the salaries of non-managers, this gap contributes significantly to the overall gender wage gap", the report said. Wyoming has the largest gap between men and women at 36 percent with NY and DE taking the top spots at 11 percent. In production, they make 70 cents to the dollar.

In an effort to close the gap, communities nationwide, including Erie County, are observing Equal Pay Day.

According to Crooms-Robinson changing corporate thinking is one of the keys to ensuring Equal Pay Day and the wage gape become things of the past.

Today is just the first of many equal pay days throughout the year, as motherhood and ethnicity compound the disparity. On average, they say, a woman makes 81 cents for every dollar a white man makes. The wage gap pops up in nearly every occupation, from lower-paid service jobs like restaurant work to high-paying occupations such as computer programming. Women are paid less than men for the same work. The sector continues to be dominated by men, which is part of the reason that their salaries are higher than women's. At the sale, women who paid a dollar received 100 percent of a cookie donated by Costeaux Bakery in Healdsburg; meanwhile every man who paid the same dollar will receive a cookie merely 80 percent the size.

The study emphasizes the disadvantage the wage gap holds against working women in Colorado who consistently have less money to put toward rent, childcare, and education because of the wage gap.

Michellene Davis is president of Executive Women of New Jersey.

"Home care and child care tend to be very low pay occupations that are disproportionately done by women of color", Shabo said.

Anti-wage secrecy laws, she says, are one of the most powerful tools in combating pay inequity because they can help workers know their real market value.
