Jays' Smoak named AL Player of the Week

Jays' Smoak named AL Player of the Week

The New York Yankees postpone their home opener against the Tampa Bay Rays amid a snowstorm Monday, according to team officials.

With the count full, Smoak fouled off a couple of curveballs before launching a 92-mph fastball to center for his seventh hit of the series.

NY lost its final two games of an opening series at Toronto for a four-game split.

Starter CC Sabathia allowed two runs over five innings with five hits, two walks and four strikeouts.

Blue Jays: Donaldson (dead arm) felt good after throwing on the field before the game. 2B Devon Travis and C Russell Martin got the day off. Gibbons said Travis, who missed more than 100 games a year ago because of a right knee injury, will get at least one day off every three days for the time being. Kahnle walked Josh Donaldson before the homer.

Gabe Kapler is already catching heat from the home fans three games into his tenure as Philadelphia's manager, and now he and his rugged pitching staff open a series against the NL East-rival Mets.

Even more impressive was how Pillar got to third. The two-run shot was just the second hit allowed by Estrada and first since a first-inning double from Giancarlo Stanton.

Gray was pulled after giving up a leadoff single to Smoak in the fifth inning. Stroman, limited to two starts in spring training because of a sore shoulder, walked three and struck out eight. Remove three dominant innings of relief by Green - including two Sunday - and the rest of the pen has yielded four homers in 40 at-bats and pitched to a 9.90 ERA.

"The first home run he hit a pretty good pitch so tip your hat and move on", Estrada said.

In the eighth, Martin led off with a single and moved to third base when Aledmys Diaz doubled. Robertson got Devon Travis to ground out on a comebacker for the second out, and manager Aaron Boone order an intentional walk to Donaldson to get to Smoak. Tampa Bay lost the final three games of its opening series at home against Boston.

Notes: Freestyle skier Mikael Kingsbury threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Lance Lynn makes his Minnesota debut at Pittsburgh after signing a $12 million, one-year contract in the offseason to join a Twins rotation that's off to a terrific start. It will be the 116th home opener in franchise history.
