McKayla Maroney says Larry Nassar manipulated her with loaves of bread

Bela and Martha Karolyi, the former coordinators and coaches of the United States girls's gymnastics team, claimed that they weren't aware of the prevalent sexual abuse of gymnasts by Lawrence G. Nassar, " the former team doctor.

Roughly 200 athletes described being abused by Nassar, who is imprisoned for molesting athletes at the school and on the USA gymnastics team.

Martha Karolyi said she had no way of knowing Nassar had been sexually abusing athletes.

Dantzscher also called for a change in USA Gymnastics training policies. And some gymnasts have come forward to complain about training methods that created a generation of champions but took an emotional toll.

Victoria Carlson, one of the accusers, said she was inspired by those who spoke out at Nassar's sentencing.

"I think they felt like it was time for them to tell their side of the story", Guthrie said.

Maroney's victim impact statement was read on her behalf at Nassar's sentencing hearing in January, and it was one of 156 statements that were read over the course of that seven-day hearing.

Nassar is now serving three concurrent jail sentences of up to 175 years, having plead guilty to a number of sexual assault charges earlier this year. The complete history of his perversion is not yet completely known, but some reports claim he may have sexually molested around 250 girls and women under the guise of medical treatment.

Long-time Michigan State University faculty members Bonnie Knutson and Michael Kaplowitz have been named MSU's new faculty athletic representatives.

This sentiment has been echoed by other members of the Fierce Five gymnastics team who have spoken up about the abuse.

The USOC did not respond to a request for comment, while a Michigan State spokesman said in a statement, "We are deeply sorry for abuse the survivors suffered at the hands of Larry Nassar and are working to make sure that something like this can never happen again".

The lawsuit also alleges that USA Gymnastics breached its duty to reveal the abuse to the victims' families, as well as the U.S. Olympic Committee, Michigan State University, and law enforcement agencies.

The Title IX investigator, a female, relying on the testimony of three of Nassar's colleagues, all women, determined that Nassar's medical treatment was appropriate and the investigation was closed. I knew it felt unusual, but he was the national team doctor.

Maroney, pictured here in 2013, retired from gymnastics in 2016.

"I at times question if my gymnastics career was really even worth it", she said while speaking to the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, according to the Associated Press. Maroney said she was abused "hundreds" of times by Nassar.

Savannah Guthrie says she hates to miss a broadcast of NBC's "Today", but recently decided to make an exception.
