Senate confirms Mike Pompeo as President Trump's second secretary of state

The U.S. Senate on a 57-42 vote on Thursday confirmed President Donald Trump's nominee Mike Pompeo as the new secretary of state after Trump abruptly fired Rex Tillerson in March.

And, rather than simply attack Paul when the Kentucky Republican voiced his concerns about the hawkishness of Pompeo on national security and foreign policy matters, Trump praised Paul publicly and worked to convince him privately.

Roughly a month ago, Pompeo met secretly in Pyongyang with North Korea's enigmatic autocrat Kim Jong Un.

The nominee to be secretary of state, CIA Director Mike Pompeo, walks to a meeting on April 18, 2018. "Mike Pompeo understands this and will make it happen as Secretary of State", Perkins continued. Trump will decide by May 12 whether to restore US economic sanctions on Tehran, which would be a severe blow to the 2015 nuclear pact between Iran and six major powers. From there, he will travel to Israel, where he will meet with Prime Minister Netanyahu, and Jordan where he will meet with King Abdullah.

As director of the CIA, Pompeo has matched the tone of Trump's foreign policy pronouncements.

"He's the flawless person to come in at this time and lead those efforts diplomatically", Republican Senator Bob Corker said ahead of the vote.

He will be forced quickly to address a wide array of other worldwide challenges, including long conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, Chinese expansionism in Asia and Russian assertiveness.

"One of the many values of robust diplomacy is that it increases our chances of solving problems peacefully, without ever firing a shot", Pompeo said.

In a statement, U.S. President Donald Trump called Pompeo a patriot whose "immense talent, energy, and intellect" will serve the nation well. "Now more than ever, the State Department needs a strong leader who has the confidence of President Trump to take on the many challenges our nation faces overseas, and Director Pompeo is the right person for this important role".

Pompeo has been a stern critic of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, an accord seen as a victory for non-proliferation by America's allies, but as a capitulation by anti-Iran hardliners. He once suggested the answer to Tehran's nuclear program - which Iran has always said was for peaceful means only - was 2,000 bombing sorties. The same day, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, of which Young is a member, voted along party lines to advance the Pompeo nomination to the full Senate.

Sen. Robert Menendez, the top Democrat on the foreign relations panel, was a vocal opponent of Pompeo's confirmation, but said he did not think the bruising confirmation fight would leave Pompeo wounded. Michael Pompeo previously served as Director of the Central intelligence Agency. Doug Jones, who joined the Senate earlier this year, also supported his confirmation.

Donnelly had announced Monday that he would vote to confirm Pompeo.
