Steelers select WR James Washington in Round Two

The Steelers traded up in the third round to grab Rudolph with the No. 76 overall pick on Friday night.

Washington's role in Pittsburgh will be a familiar one - deep threat. That's fine by the 22-year-old Rudolph, who admits he's not sure why he slipped to the third round behind the group of five quarterbacks that went in the first.

"Had no clue this was in the works".

But while Rudolph now appears to be Ben Roethlisberger's heir apparent, he'll have longer to wait than Mayfield to take over a starting role.

Roethlisberger, 36, committed instantly to the 2018 season following last year's playoff loss to the Jaguars and has told players and some of the front-office personnel that he would like to play at.

"Well, I don't know", Fichtner said.

Rudolph will fight for a backup spot with Landry Jones and Josh Dobbs while soaking up what he can from Roethlisberger.

Rudolph set 54 school records during his time at Oklahoma State and at 6-foot-5, 235-pounds is similar to Roethlisberger in terms of size.

"I'm a little done with the comparison questions", Rudolph said.

Washington's selection marks the latest in a tradition of success for OSU wide receivers in the National Football League draft, as he joins Justin Blackmon, Dez Bryant, Rashaun Woods and Hart Lee Dykes as early-round picks at the position. "I can't wait to work with those guys and learn from them".

The Steelers wrapped up day 2 by bolstering their offensive line selecting tackle Chukwuma Okorafor from Western Michigan.
