Guatemala opens doors to new embassy in Jerusalem

Honduras is expected to follow Guatemala soon with opening an embassy in Jerusalem. Global powers including the UK, France and Russian Federation had previously slammed the USA decision to move their embassy, while 128 nations backed a UN resolution rejecting the White House recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Guatemala has opened its new embassy in Jerusalem, becoming the second country to do so after the United States.

The US and Guatemalan moves break with decades of global consensus.

"We remember our friends, and Guatemala is our friend - then and now", Netanyahu said.

Countries including the UK, China, France and Russian Federation and countries in the Middle East including Egypt and Saudi Arabia voted in favour of the resolution.

But Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said the United States had opened an "American settlement outpost in East Jerusalem".

Palestinians seek East Jerusalem as the capital of a state they hope to establish in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

There was barely any mention of the Gaza violence at Monday's lavish inauguration ceremony for the new embassy, an upgraded consular building located just 80 kilometers away.

Trump's move broke with decades of worldwide consensus that Jerusalem's status must be negotiated between the parties, drawing near global condemnation.

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas called the new embassy "a U.S. settlement in East Jerusalem".

Wednesday's embassy opening was attended by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales, who touted the move as "a new era in relations between us".

The move comes just two days after the USA opened its own embassy in the city.

Still, in stark contrast to the dignitaries in Jerusalem, tens of thousands of rioters on Monday burned tires, attacked the cargo trucks carrying supplies between Israel and Gaza and did millions of dollars in damage.

The Israeli foreign ministry has said Paraguay is planning to move by the end of the month, according to Reuters.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and other top officials joined an American delegation of Trump administration officials and Republican and evangelical Christian supporters.

Israel regards all of the city, including the eastern sector it annexed after the 1967 conflict, as its capital. Leaders in the European Union and the United Nations urged Israel to refrain from using deadly force.

There have also been reports of support for a move from sections of the government in Romania. Angelina Solis, Guatemala's ambassador to Israel, hailed her country's decision to return to Jerusalem as a "brave" and "historic" and revealed her belief that "a lot of blessings will come after this decision". El Salvador and Costa Rica were the last two countries to move their diplomatic headquarters back to Tel Aviv.
