Hamilton wins Formula One Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona

While Hamilton won in Baku, his dominant performance in winning from pole position in Barcelona leaves the championship leader confident Mercedes will be able to maintain that level.

Racing resumed on lap seven, with Hamilton holding his lead through the restart.

Mercedes regained the lead in the constructors' standings and are now 27 points clear of Ferrari who had 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen retire from the race.

But Ferrari's misjudgement saw Max Verstappen take advantage - despite an earlier coming together with Lance Stroll (him again) resulting in a virtual safety auto - to take his first podium of 2018 for Red Bull.

"Today, the auto and myself, I felt that synergy which I hadn't been feeling for the whole year", Hamilton said.

Hamilton had a clean start, with Vettel moving from third to second by passing Bottas on the outside of Turn 1.

It was a record-extending 74th pole for Hamilton, and the first since the season-opener in Australia. During the pitstop phase, Bottas was able to leapfrog Vettel and secure a 1-2 for Mercedes.

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton won the Spanish GP on Sunday.

Alonso, though, was the only McLaren driver to reach the chequered flag after team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne lost drive, albeit while running outside of the points-paying positions.

Hamilton conceded that he will head to the next round in Monaco with caution rather than in expectation following his poor display at the principality previous year, but the 64th win of his career will, for the first time this term, provide him with optimism that he can outdo Vettel in their tug of war for glory.

The only excitement of the forgetful grand prix was a first-lap crash that took three drivers out of contention.

Red Bull colleague Daniel Ricciardo was fifth, ahead of Kevin Magnussen for Haas.

Force India's Sergio Perez finished in P9 with Sauber's Charl LeClerc in P10.

Meanwhile, in the United States Australian Will Power took his first IndyCar victory of the year at the Indianapolis road circuit.

"We've got our Mercedes board with it's great to have them all here and see that true force within the team, strength in depth, so I hope we can continue". It had seemed as though the Dutchman had blown another opportunity for a strong finish when he collided with Lance Stroll just after a Virtual Safety Car period, but the damage to his front wing did not seem to seriously jeopardise his race from that point.

Ferrari's day went from bad to worse when Kimi Raikkonen suffered an issue with the auto and pulled over. The victor has come from the front row in 24 of the 27 races in Barcelona.

Looking to get fresher tyres on for the fight to the finish Vettel actually ended up losing two places after a slow stop. "I was pushing every single lap using it as a test bench to understand what I liked about the balance and how can I play with it more and how can I squeeze more out of it and do all sorts to understand what more I can get from".
