Russian fighter jet comes within feet of USA spy plane

A Russian fighter jet performed an intercept of a US Navy P-8 surveillance plane based in Jacksonville while it was flying in worldwide airspace over the Baltic Sea Tuesday, two defense officials told CNN. "The crew of Russia's Sukhoi-27 jet approached the aircraft staying at a safe distance, identified it as a U.S. strategic bomber B-52 and escorted it for some time".

The Russian came within about 20 feet of the Navy plane, but the American pilots reported they never felt threatened or unsafe.

The U.S. Navy P-8 surveillance plane was flying in worldwide airspace over the increasingly contested Baltic Sea when it was approached at high speeds by a Russian Su-27. Zach Harrell said, according to CNN.

U.S. Navy officials said at the time that the buzzing "crossing directly through the EP-3's flight path" and lasted roughly two hours and forty minutes.

The representative of naval forces of the US in Europe, Zach Harrell declined to comment on the incident, saying that "the ships and aircraft of the U.S. Navy routine interact with military units of other countries".

The Defense Ministry said the B-52 bomber was over global waters near the Russian border.

2 months before the Pentagon announced that the su-30 flew at a distance of about 15 meters in front of patrol aircraft of the US Navy P-8A Poseidon, becoming the cause of severe turbulence for the latter.
