First 'Bumblebee' Teaser Trailer Injects Some Heart into the 'Transformers' Franchise

However, Paramount has high hopes for continuing the series via its first spinoff: Bumblebee, which will focus, per its title, on the heroic, vocally challenged yellow Autobot. As for other Transformers, the roster is limited to Bee, Starscream, Barricade (Jess Harnell), Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen), and one final, now unnamed robot voiced by Martin Short.

'A driver don't pick the auto, the vehicle pick the driver, it's a mystical bond between man and machine, ' intones a voiceover, quoting the words of Uncle Bobby the used auto dealer from the first Transformers film. This seems like quite a big change for a film franchise that's better known for lots of stuff blowing up than character relationships.

As you can tell from this first trailer, which feels more like "A Girl and Her Robot" story than any of Bay's high-octane, often incomprehensible action-packed smash-em-ups, and I'm here for it. John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., John Ortiz, Jason Drucker, Pamela Adlon, and Stephen Schneider also star. It's set in the year 1987 and gives some backstory on what Bumblebee was up to prior to meeting Sam Witwicky in the first of the Transformers live-action movies. The script comes from writer Christina Hodson and is based on the Transformers line of Hasbro toys. Are we excited for him to help bring this world to life, or would we prefer to see him back in the director's chair? Paramount will release "Bumblebee" in theaters on December 21.
