Harry Potter, Andrew Garfield, Glenda Jackson win top Tony Awards

"Let's just bake a cake for everyone who wants a cake to be baked", he said.

Other winners included Carousel (best choreography and best featured actress in a musical - Lindsay Mendez). Though "Mean Girls" was nominated for 12 awards, the stage adapation of the Tina Fey film did not win any. "I agree", the Pulitzer Prize victor said.

"Do you have any idea how hard it is to get tickets for Bruce Springsteen's show on Broadway?" "I fall in love with her every time", he said of future Leading Actress victor Katrina Lenk.

A small-scale, intimate musical about hard-won cultural understanding was an altogether apt Tony victor on a night where tolerance and inclusion were constant themes.

It's too bad because Once on This Island proved that it deserved the win with the best performance of the evening, a jubilant event that culminated with Nathan Lane having a close encounter with a goat.

The Middle East conflict, immigration, LGBT equality, gun control - many social issues came up, explicitly or implicitly, during the ceremony, which was hosted with a light (and musical) touch by Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban. The tweaked lines paid homage to theater's grueling eight-times-a-week schedule: "I'll see my friends when the contract ends" and "I'm holding on for dear life/someone please check on my kids and my wife".

Before introducing Bruce Springsteen's performance at the Tony Awards, actor Robert De Niro walked onstage at Radio City Hall, announcing, "First, I wanna say, 'F**k Trump.' It's no longer 'Down with Trump, ' it's 'F**k Trump'". Garfield said as he accepted his first Tony award.

This was Salonga's fourth time on the Tony stage.

Prior to the awards night, Salonga congratulated her friends on Twitter saying: "Today is going to be the craziest of insane days, and I may not be able to see my friends from other shows because of shuttles and busyness".

Andrew Garfield, accepting his Tony for best lead actor in a play for Angels In America, said, "It is a spirit that says we are all made perfectly". His admission letter to Hogwarts is undoubtedly on its way. Another work by a major American playwright - Edward Albee's "Three Tall Women" - also held a share of the spotlight as two of its three stars, Glenda Jackson and Laurie Metcalf, were honored as best lead actress and best featured actress in a play. When the camera cut to him, it looked like he wanted to pretend he dropped his phone and crawl under the seat in front of him.

In a mesmerising moment, Melody Herzfeld, the heroic drama teacher who nurtured numerous young people demanding change following the February school shooting in Parkland, Florida, was honoured from the Tony Award stage. "It didn't just change me, it saved me", he said.
