Hernandez nets as Mexico see off South Korea

Mexico had their second of the game in the 66th minute, however, when Hernandez collected a super pass from Lozano before finishing low into the bottom corner of the net to register his 50th global goal.

South Korean forward Son Heung-min scored a scintillating consolation goal in injury time but it was too little too late for the East Asian nation, which now can not qualify for the first knockout stage of the tournament.

Mexico will now have its eyes on Sweden and Germany.

Cancún-born Carlos Vela put El Tri in front in the 26th minute of the match with a penalty kick the team was awarded due to a South Korean handball.

Hernandez also scored for Mexico on June 23 at the last World Cup, netting in a 3-1 defeat of Croatia.

"We have beaten two brilliant and complicated teams, Germany and South Korea", Hernandez said.

South Korea will be eliminated if Sweden wins or draws. Chicharito bagged his 50th goal in worldwide play on a counter-attack led by breakout star Hirving Lozano - but Mexico was only able to score because referee Milorad Mazic allowed play to continue after Hector Herrera fouled Ki Sung-yueng to gain possession.

Edson Alvarez was brought in as centre back for Mexico's World Cup Group F game against South Korea on Saturday in the only change made by coach Jose Luis Osorio after the Latin Americans defeated defending champions Germany. A volley from Vela skimmed the bar minutes later.

As South Korea's sole threat, it was fitting that Tottenham striker Son gave his side fleeting hope in added time with a sublime, curling strike from 25 yards.

South Korea: Jo Hyeon-woo, Lee Yong, Son Heung-min, Ju Se-jong, Hwang Hee-chan, Kim Min-woo, Ki Sung-yueng, Kim Young-gwon, Jang Hyun-soo, Lee Jae-sung, Moon Seo-min.

With a win today against Germany, Sweden will tie Mexico for top spot in Group F, depending on goal differential. "We have to maintain intact our humility and modesty and to try and progress as far as possible in this World Cup".
