Later that day, Johnson was released and reunited with her family.

The 63-year-old great-grandmother had been arrested in 1997 for her involvement in a cocaine ring.

WVTM-TV in Birmingham, Alabama, later showed pictures of Johnson shortly after her release, running in happiness from a van towards family members holding flowers and waiting for her beside the road.

"There's so much food, crying, hugging, singing and dancing".

"We had a huge celebration and that was impromptu of course", said Johnson. She has said that prison guards wrote letters on her behalf and that she has perfectly clean behavior, spending her free time writing plays.

It is said that Kardashian West contacted Ivanka Trump first, in order to get help setting up a meeting with the president.

"Kim was the key to all of this. We are optimistic about Ms. Johnson's future and hopeful that she-and so many like her-will get a second chance at life".

Denied clemency three times during the Obama administration, Johnson says this time it felt different. "The only thing I can do is to make him proud that I he did it and not disappoint him", she said.

Another attorney, Brittany K. Barnett, said earlier that Johnson feels overwhelmed with emotion and like she's been "resurrected from the dead".

She said both parents died while she was in prison. "I don't think it's going to set in for probably another week or so when she's still there", said Scales.

BREAKING: President Trump has granted clemency to #AliceMarieJohnson after meeting with @KimKardashian West to talk about her case last week.

"I'm thankful for the media that has been covering this because they have magnified the plight of those serving these sentences for non-violent crimes". "I'm hanging in here and won't let go until I walk out of these doors!"

She also thanked her "war angel" Kardashian. "I was a little bit shocked because she was very calm, and I had assumed she knew", she told Van. "When you see my face, you see so many other faces that I represent".

Mr Trump last week pardoned conservative commentator and filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza, convicted of making illegal campaign contributions, and has recently granted pardons to the late heavyweight boxer Jack Johnson, controversial former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and Lewis "Scooter" Libby, a former top aide to then-vice president Dick Cheney.
