Mexico upsets World Cup champion Germany 1-0

Mexico on Sunday caused arguably the biggest upset of World Cup 2018 so far when they beat Germany 1-0 in an absorbing contest thanks to a superbly-taken first-half goal from Hirving Lozano at the Luzhnki Stadium in Russian Federation.

Tremors were recorded in Mexico City after Hirving Lozano fired the winning goal past German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer in Russian Federation, according to seismic monitoring agency Simmsa.

German newspaper Die Welt took a swipe at Mexico today in the name of World Cup soccer, publishing a somewhat inflammatory headline about what Germany would do to them on the pitch by alluding to US President Donald Trump's plans for a barrier on the border. Below are some reactions to Mexico's first world cup win.

But despite the loss - the first for a German team in a World Cup opener since 1982 - coach Joachim Low remains confident that his side will progress to the knockout stage in Russian Federation.

The positive approach was rewarded with the only goal of the game after 35 minutes when Hirving Lozano finished off a flowing counter-attacking move with a crisp drive.

"I'd much rather say that we're going to rest".

Kroos, who like Hummels was part of the team that won the 2014 World Cup, said Germany paid the price for failing to stem the waves of Mexican first-half attacks.

"We were nervous and we weren't playing the game we wanted to play, " Germany coach Joachim Loew said.

"Mexico deserved to win and we made it too easy for them, even though we knew exactly how not to play against them".

Aleksandar Kolarov's brilliant second-half free-kick saw Serbia beat Costa Rica 1-0 in their opening Group E contest. In the first half of the match we were the superior team.

Seeking defensive reinforcement, Osorio brought on 39-year-old veteran Rafael Marquez to play in his fifth World Cup. "We need to give all the credit where it is due, and that is with the players", Osorio said.

"We decided on (goalscorer) Hirving Lozano as he is our fastest player".

Mexico's next opponent is South Korea.

Spain, in 2010, are the only side to win the World Cup after losing their opening match, when they were beaten by Switzerland. From Manuel Neuer in goal, to Mats Hummels in defense, Toni Kroos in the midfield and Timo Werner and World Cup scoring machine Thomas Muller, Jogi Low's side is primed for a strong showing in Russian Federation.
