However, Emery has remained coy when commenting on links and has opted not to give anything away with regard to the likelihood of his new club signing Nzonzi. I think he continues here because it is a big project here and his commitment to Arsenal is very strong.

Having played a part in the 8-0 win at Boreham Wood last weekend, Smith Rowe took his place in a fairly-experienced Arsenal side, with the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang all starting.

'This is the moment for young players to show their quality, like Emile has done today, ' he said.

However, early in the second-half, attacking midfielder Smith-Rowe netted a stunner, slaloming through the Atletico backline before unleashing a thumping shot from the edge of the box.

Both sides started with unfamiliar line-ups but Arsenal were the dominant force in the first half before they were hit with a sucker-punch four minutes from the break.

"I am very happy with how the club is working and we are working every day on how we can improve".

"This goal Smith scored was very good for him, for the team but I think what's important for us is that everyone, the young players and new players, were working very well today", said the Spaniard.

He told reporters: "I speak every day with him [Gazidis]".

Emery has already brought in five new faces in his first transfer window as Arsenal head coach.
