England then came within 20 minutes of reaching their first final since lifting the World Cup in 1966 before bowing out of Croatia in extra-time.

The other nominees are: Massimiliano Allegri (Juventus), Juergen Klopp (Liverpool), Diego Simeone (Atletico Madrid), Ernesto Valverde (Barcelona).

Portugal worldwide Ronaldo scored 15 goals as Real won the Champions League for a third successive campaign and, following the World Cup, he joined Juventus in an unexpected £99million move.

France coach Didier Deschamps and compatriot Zinedine Zidane, who led Real Madrid to a third successive Champions League title, headlined the 11 candidates in the running for men's coach of the year.

England manager Gareth Southgate was also named on the shortlist after guiding the national team to a first World Cup semi-final in 28 years.

Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah are both in contention to win the Best FIFA Men's Player award for 2018.

Stanislav Cherchesov of Russian Federation has also been recognised for his side's achievements in their home tournament, as has Roberto Martinez, who led Belgium to the semi-finals and subsequently victory in the third-place play-off.

Ronaldo, who guided Real Madrid to their third Champions League title in a row, won the award in 2017.

Federation Internationale de Football Association also announced the 10 nominees for The Best Women's Player award: Lucy Bronze, Pernille Harder, Ada Hegerberg, Amandine Henry, Samantha Kerr, Saki Kumagai, Dzsenifer Marozsan, Marta, Megan Rapinoe and Wendie Renard.

Journalists, fans, national team coaches, and captains will vote for their final three.
