John McCain Aide Reads Senator's Final Message To America

Ducey is balancing the demands of the many conservative Arizona Republicans who have soured on McCain due to his dovish immigration stance, criticism of President Donald Trump and vote against a rollback of President Barack Obama's health care law.

Senator McCain died on Saturday after a battle with cancer. No man ever had a more loving wife or children he was prouder of than I am of mine.

Instead, both the president and vice-president offered their condolences to the senator's family via Twitter.

"My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain", President Trump wrote. With his usual strength of will, he has chosen to discontinue medical treatment.

Questioned whether he believed McCain - a former Navy pilot who was shot down over Vietnam - was a hero, Trump remained stone-faced behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office after announcing a trade breakthrough with Mexico.

"God bless you, and God bless America".

The Senator was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour in July 2017.

"They said that it's very serious". Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., said Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation", and "to ask them to speak at your funeral, and for them to be honored at the opportunity, that tells you all you need to know". "Now we're gonna do what we can, get the best doctors we can find and do the best we can.' And, at the same time, celebrate with gratitude a life well lived".

The maverick politician, who was a proponent of USA power, was taken prisoner of war in Vietnam but after his release helped secure the repatriation of the remains of missing-in-action soldiers. He wrote about his experience in may of 1973.

Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., said in a statement that McCain "defined public service, honor, and love of country".

The Vietnam News Agency said Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc sent a message of condolence to McCain's family and U.S. Senate leaders, while Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh paid respects to McCain at the embassy. "At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for sixty years". Since then, he won re-election five times.

McCain, even as he neared death, disparaged Trump's presidency, rebuking the US leader for his seeming embrace of Russian President Vladimir Putin's position at last month's Helsinki summit that Russia had not meddled in the 2016 USA presidential election.

Speaking at a press conference in Arizona, Rick Davis held back his emotions and frequently needed to pause, while reading the late Arizona Republican's final statement in which McCain stayed true to his reputation for "straight talk" and encouraged Americans not to "despair of our present difficulties".
