New Australian PM Scott Morrison pledges 'generational change' to heal ruling party

"In the end our party room has decided that they want a new generation of leaders, who can focus on the Australian people".

The only frontbench position sorted so far is that of Treasurer, with new deputy Liberal leader Josh Frydenberg sworn into the role yesterday.

But Morrison faces a series of policy decisions that could reopen old wounds within the government, including an impasse on energy, a topic that acted as a catalyst in Turnbull's demise.

The Dutton forces circulated a petition to force the prime minister to call a Liberal partyroom meeting last night - a tactic used successfully by the Rudd forces in their final assault on Julia Gillard in 2013.

Turnbull stepped down as Liberal leader on Friday and will resign from Parliament within a fortnight.

The former prime minister was an increasingly public critic of the now-deposed Malcolm Turnbull, leading the push for Peter Dutton to take over as leader.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has been one of the first world leaders to congratulate Australia's incoming Prime Minister Scott Morrison and says he has been involved proactively in promoting New Zealand to the world in the past.

He also condemned Dutton and said that "many Australians will be shaking their heads in disbelief at what's been done". The trend is universally hated by Australians.

Al Jazeera's Kathy Novak reports from Sydney.

"The Australia of the future has to be a nation that is agile, that is innovative, that is creative".

The former tourism marketing official and...

"We have people across the country who are suffering and look at what you're doing", he said, listing national woes including the worst drought in half a century that has forced some farmers to shoot their livestock.

Some also find his politics confusing - he started his career as a moderate in the ruling conservative Liberal Party and morphed into a conservative.

"I mean, politics is a tough business", he said. "There are no greater friends than the United States and Australia!" he wrote on Twitter.

Born May 13, 1968 in the beachside Sydney suburb of Bronte, Scott John Morrison was the younger of two sons, whose parents ran church youth programs.

Fast-forward to 2015 and Turnbull got his revenge by dramatically forcing Abbott from office in a Liberal Party coup, claiming the government faced defeat at the next election without change at the top.

Governing in coalition with the rural-based National Party, the government has trailed the opposition Labor Party in opinion polls for several years.

"Morrison is a social and economic conservative and has strong religious convictions".

Not a single leader in recent times has managed to complete a full term, a pattern many Australians say they are sick and exhausted of.
