Whitmer, Schuette win governor nominations

According to the unofficial results at press time from Ballotpedia, with 100 percent of precincts reporting, Schuette won the Republican race with 494,297 votes, Whitmer edged out her Democratic competitors with 585,498 votes, and Libertarian candidate Gelineau received 3,503 votes.

Schuette, like Kobach, was also endorsed by Trump for governor. In suburban Detroit's 11th District, GOP businesswoman Lena Epstein and Democrat Haley Stevens were leading the fields to follow a retiring Republican congressman.

Former Democratic legislative leader Gretchen Whitmer and Republican state Attorney General Bill Schuette won the nominations for MI governor on Tuesday, besting five other candidates who were also vying to succeed term-limited GOP Gov. Rick Snyder. Laura Kelly of Kansas brought the number of female gubernatorial nominees this year to 11, breaking the previous record of 10, according to the Gender Watch 2018, a project of the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University and the Barbara Lee Family Foundation.

Fred Woodhams, a spokesman for the MI secretary of state's office, said Tuesday's turnout was "drastically higher" than in past primaries, approaching 2.2 million voters. Turnout figures posted online only go back to 1978.

But according to reports, the race was still too close to call, in a safe Republican seat held by them since 1983.

She said that established Democrats are "feverishly working" on their own re-elections, but neglecting to support rising younger campaigns is why Republicans are winning. Said differently, every candidate has the responsibility to the voters to make public just what any and all major policy expenditures are expected to cost and how they will be paid for.

Near the end of the discussion, Goodman asked the 28-year-old candidate, "are you still for a two-state solution with Israel and Palestine?"

Crowds outside the GOP rally were not that large, much smaller than what President Trump has drawn in West Michigan.

Though Whitmer may still choose a male running mate, the Democrats are fielding women for governor, Senate, state attorney general and secretary of state. He declined to name her. Bernie Sanders, D-Vt., during his presidential campaign in 2016.

"For me, I'm a firm believer in finding a two-state solution in this issue, and I'm happy to sit down with leaders on both of these".
