Kavanaugh And Accuser To Testify Publicly Before Senators Next Week

One thing I will say is that as I understand it, Judge Kavanaugh spent quite a bit of time with Senator Feinstein and it wasn't even brought up at that meeting and she had this information.

She said Kavanaugh and a friend - both "stumbling drunk", she says - corralled her in a bedroom when she was around 15 and Kavanaugh was around 17.

The situation would draw clear parallels with Justice Clarence Thomas' 1991 confirmation hearings when he faced allegations of sexual harassment from Anita Hill. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, was trying to arrange separate, follow-up calls with Kavanaugh and Ford, but just for aides to Grassley and Sen.

Ford said she will participate in any proceedings she is invited to participate in.

"I categorically and unequivocally deny this allegation", Kavanaugh said in a statement. But Republican leaders showed no interest in a public spectacle that would thrust Kavanaugh and Ford before television cameras with each offering dramatic - and no doubt conflicting - versions of what they say did or didn't happen in the early 1980s.

Kavanaugh and Judge have denied the allegations, and Ford said she did not speak about the incident for years.

It's a courageous woman who evidently decided that no matter how she might be affected for years to come by her decision to go public- to then go on and decide that what happens to her country is more important than what happens to her. Both are critics of President Trump and neither are up for reelection in their mostly conservative states. We need to do right by Dr. Ford, Judge Kavanaugh, and the American people. Dr. Ford's attorney could have approached my office, while keeping her client confidential and anonymous, so that these allegations could be thoroughly investigated. I'd like everybody to be very happy.

"These allegations are serious and deserve to be treated with respect", Cruz said in a statement.

White House senior counselor Kellyanne Conway told reporters Monday that Ford "should not be ignored or insulted; she should be heard". Dianne Feinstein of California, in July. Flake sits on the panel, showing the GOP majority is now in question. The Senate Judiciary Committee has invited him and Ford to testify at a hearing Monday, although Ford's lawyers say she wants the FBI to investigate her allegation before she testifies.

Nearly a quarter - 23% - didn't know whether the Senate should vote to confirm Kavanaugh, slightly fewer than "didn't know" about Thomas in July (pre-Hill accusations) - 31%.

"For me, we can't vote until we hear more", said Flake, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The two both testified publicly before Congress, and Thomas was eventually confirmed in the closest Supreme Court confirmation vote in more than a century.

"To provide ample transparency, we will hold a public hearing Monday to give these recent allegations a full airing".

"What is puzzling to me", GOP Sen. "There's a lot of information we don't know and the Federal Bureau of Investigation should have the time it needs to investigate this new material".

Kavanaugh said Friday, before Ford's name was made public, that the charge is false. "She took a lie detector test, she talked to this to her therapist - they were having family counseling, in part because of what happened to her - five years ago and told all the details, and third, to come out and say something like this puts you and your family through incredible scrutiny".

"If there is real substance to this, it demands a response", Murkowski said.

Republicans say the allegations have already cast a shadow over Mr Kavanaugh but that it does not appear to be enough to change the votes in the narrowly divided 51 - 49 Senate.

He is "a man of character and integrity" who has been widely lauded by other women, she said. "I was listening to some reporting this morning saying that they're going to fight this tooth and nail, that they're going to grill her".
