Lexus ES gets new side mirrors

The Digital Outer Mirrors displays what is on the left, right and rear of the auto on a monitor inside the cabin that is stacked below the A-pillar.

There's also the enhanced view software, which displays the footage on the monitors inside the cabin in high quality even at night and inclement weather.

The feed from the new side camera's will be displayed inside on two 5-inch displays that sit on the ES' a-pillars.

. It's not just plain feed too - the Digital Outer Mirrors offer an expanded view of the car's surroundings by augmenting the display area during turns or when reversing. We're talking here about cameras that replace traditional wing mirrors, and the Lexus is the first mass-production vehicle to bring that to the market.

The system goes above and beyond by zooming out or enhancing each view depending on when you signal or put the vehicle in reverse.

The Yomiuri ShimbunToyota Motor Corp. has announced that it would install digital outer mirrors in place of sideview mirrors in its Lexus brand's new ES model to be released in late October.

Finally, the removal of the conventional chunky side mirrors provides better visibility from inside the vehicle.

The 2019 Lexus ES in Japan sees its side mirrors replaced with small, aerodynamic camera stalks. Their absence also means there's less drag and wind noise, which Lexus says results in a quieter, more comfortable cabin experience for passengers.
