'Paul Pogba will not be vice-captain anymore' - Jose Mourinho

'Paul Pogba will not be vice-captain anymore' - Jose Mourinho

Mourinho had stripped French star Paul Pogba of his alternate captaincy this week, but Pogba didn't appear to be bothered by demotion as he arrived to practice.

Reports began to circulate prior to United's disappointing 8-7 penalty shoot-out defeat to Derby County in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday that Pogba - who was rested - had been relieved of the role. But the Casillas affair took a wider toll in terms of Mourinho's standing with his senior players, with Ronaldo among those to renege on an uneasy truce.

Old Trafford clearly isn't big enough for the both of them and it's hard to imagine that both of them will still be at the club next season.

Pogba and Mourinho's deteriorating relationship came festering to a head on Wednesday morning after the pair had a frosty exchange before the start of their training session.

Mourinho declined to give a specific reason for his latest decision in what has developed into an ongoing spat between him and the 25-year-old.

With other players such as Marcus Rashford in the vicinity, Pogba gestured, as if to say "What have I done?" and again mouthed something to Mourinho.

"To have the personality to step up and take penalties and perform the way they did, I'm just a proud manager, they were great", he added.

"The person who made the decision to be second captain was also me".

"I am the manager, I can make these decisions, no fall out at all, no problems at all".

A source close to a first-team member at United has told ESPN FC the player has spoken of how he believes he has regressed at Old Trafford and failed to improve under Mourinho's management, having credited previous coaches with taking his game to another level. "Man Utd have had some good away results but suddenly they're not able to win at home", Keown said on BBC Radio 5Live.

"You don't have much time to have the ball, to turn, to one-touch".

"It's right up there", said Lampard when asked how the trumph compared to his highs as a player.

But in his programme notes for Tuesday's game, which Derby won on penalties, Mourinho said he was unhappy with some members of his squad.

'I don't think he's disciplined to play in Mourinho's midfield.

Whether that means Manchester United ultimately will sell Pogba to Barcelona, back to Juventus or elsewhere will be among the hottest topics of the Premier League season.
