Tottenham star Son Heung-min spared military service after Asian Games win

As this rules applies to members of the entire team, not only Son Heung Min but also other star players including Lee Seung Woo and Hwang Hee Chan (who each scored a goal at the final match) were officially exempt from serving in the military.

A late header from Ayase Ueda gave South Korea an almighty fright, but they survived a nervous last few moments to capture a record fifth Asian Games title.

Son Heung-min thanked Tottenham and Mauricio Pochettino for supporting him during South Korea's triumphant Asian Games campaign.

"I am really really, really grateful to them (supporters)".

"I want to say that my teammates have been awesome".

The Koreans dominated the final but wasted several decent opportunities before substitute Lee broke the deadlock by smashing a left-foot shot into the roof of the net three minutes into extra time.

South Korea dominated the opening half and saw Hwang Ui-jo waste a glorious chance to break the deadlock, and their profligacy continued after the restart.

"Tottenham have supported me so much and that means a lot to me".

"Normally that's not an easy decision". I really want to say thank you to the coach and the fans of Spurs.

All South Korean men are legally required to carry out at least two years of military service before the age of 28.

South Korea beat neighbours North Korea to take gold in 2014 but Son was not in the squad as his club at the time - Bayer Leverkusen - exercised their right to refuse his release.

The win means that a calculated gamble by his employers, Tottenham Hotspur, has paid off. Spurs released their increasingly influential forward, allowing him to miss their opening four matches of the season, so that he could lead his country to gold in Indonesia and spare himself the mandatory military service he nearly certainly would have had to return home for in the coming months.
