Trinis watch for Hurricane Michael

But it rapidly intensified, and its top winds clocked in at 60 miles per hour by late Sunday evening.

Once the storm makes landfall, some projections estimate that it could make its way across Georgia and into North and SC before moving out into the Atlantic ocean.

Michael has intensified into a hurricane and the National Weather Service has issued a hurricane watch for most of the Florida Panhandle and the Big Bend.

A hurricane watch has been posted for the Florida Gulf Coast, all the way from the Alabama-Florida border to the Suwannee River in Florida. We are working closely and coordinating with our local, state and federal partners in anticipation of the storm's potential impacts.

Michael's large size, strong winds and heavy rains could produce hazardous flooding along a stretch of Florida's Gulf coast with many rivers and estuaries where seawater pushed ashore by a hurricane could get trapped, said Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham.

The governor warned that storm surge could affect areas of Florida not in the storm's direct path.

Michael is now centered about 50 miles south of the western tip of Cuba and is moving north. A storm surge of up to 12 feet is forecast for a large section of the Florida coast.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Monday declared a state of emergency for the entire state as the storm pushes its way toward the southern U.S.

Also in that report, Dixon said Gillum's handling of the storm situation and his ensuing feud with Scott loomed over his political future.

With the ground saturated from Hurricane Florence, inland flooding is also predicted.

"We have never seen a storm like this in this part of our state", he said after the briefing.

Despite Hurricane Michael approaching Florida from the Gulf Coast side, the system is expected to bring rain around the same time the king tide, an astronomical event, is expected, making St. Augustine more vulnerable to flooding.

"It would be a tropical storm for us", Saavedra said.

As the track stands right now, tropical storm force winds will be the main concern.

"Hurricane conditions will spread over portions of western Cuba this afternoon, where a hurricane warning is now in effect".

Ray Martin, a National Weather Service meteorologist, said heavy rain from Michael poses the greatest threat to Maryland.
