US Orchestrated Drone Attack on Russian Base in Syria, Defense Ministry Says

The drones that attacked Russia's Khmeymim airbase in Syria were operated from the U.S. Poseidon-8 reconnaissance plane, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Colonel General Alexander Fomin said.

The Kremlin said on Thursday that it was very alarmed by a report from the Russian Defence Ministry alleging that a United States spy plane coordinated a drone attack on Russia's Hmeymim air base in Syria in January.

The drones were moving in a common combat battle deployment while a U.S. Poseidon-8 military aircraft was loitering offshore near Syria, Fomin said, speaking at the plenary session of the Xiangshan security forum in Beijing. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made clear that the military has analyzed all available data and has drawn the necessary conclusions before saying that the drone attack on the Russian airbase was directed from a US P-8 Poseidon surveillance plane. There was no US comment on the claim.

"This is undoubtedly a very alarming report", he noted.

A Pentagon spokesman at the time said that "any suggestion that USA or coalition forces played a role in an attack on a Russian base is without any basis in fact and is utterly irresponsible".

The two leaders also held talks about Washington's decision to withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF Treaty). It has come under repeated drone attacks launched by the rebels this year.
