One person dead, two others hurt after Alabama mall shooting

One teen is dead and two others are injured following a shooting at an Alabama mall prior to Black Friday shopping.

Rector said a 12-year-old girl also struck by gunfire was hospitalised.

The shooting at Riverchase Galleria mall in the town Hoover left at least one person dead and two others injured, including a 12-year-old girl who was wounded, local police said in a news conference. As the gunman tried to flee the scene, the guard, who was an off-duty cop, shot and killed him. The two injured people have been hospitalized.

Police told CNN that the young girl "does not have life-threatening injuries", and is now being treated for her injuries. She was taken to a Children's Hospital of Alabama and is in stable condition, according to police.

Social media video posted online reportedly from inside the mall during the shooting depicted chaotic scenes with numerous rounds of gunfire heard.

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave while the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office investigates.

"It was terrifying, " Joiner told AL.com.

The Hoover Police Department said the scene is now secure.

Every year there are stories of Black Friday gone wrong: people being trampled in mad rushes to get the last cheap PS4, getting stuck in a crowded Wal Mart for hours or even people getting dehydrated while camped out waiting for a store to open. It's located outside the city of Birmingham, in the city of Hoover.

"We were fortunate that that Hoover officer was there where he needed to be, and we believe at this point that maybe he prevented further injuries", Rector said. "While there is no current danger to our community, the shopping center will remain closed for tonight".
