Former Cubs infielder Luis Valbuena dies in auto accident in Venezuela

The MLB community learned this morning of the tragic death of two former infielders, Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo. Authorities say both men were in the same vehicle that veered off the road as the driver, a chauffeur, tried to avoid a rock sliding into the road.

Both were playing for Cardenales de Lara in the Venezuelan league. The 33-year-old was released in August.

"We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former Angel Luis Valbuena and former Major League Baseball infielder José Castillo", the Angels tweeted. Ex- Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Carlos Rivero was driving the vehicle and survived the accident. He split 2008 between the Giants and Astros, then finished his career by playing three professional seasons in Japan. He hit nine home runs and drove in 33 runs for the Halos in 96 games in 2018. The Pirates defeated the Astros 8-0. He recorded a.254 batting average, 39 homes runs and 218 career RBIs. He also spent time with the Seattle Mariners, Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros.

MLBTR joins the baseball world in mourning the loss of the two and in expressing heartfelt condolences to the families, loved ones, friends and former teammates of both Valbuena and Castillo.

Rivero's only big league action came during a four-game stint with the Red Sox in 2004, getting one start at third base.
