Trump signals no end in sight to shutdown

They unequivocally oppose using shutdowns as a means of resolving policy disputes.

Trump, speaking to reporters Tuesday in the Oval Office during the fourth day of the impasse, also revealed that he will be going to the border in Texas for a "groundbreaking" ceremony for a portion of the project at the end of January.

National Park Service employees open the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse near the White House, Monday, Dec. 24, 2018, in Washington.

Trump has requested $5 billion for the wall, an amount Democrats have rejected. 'At some point the Democrats not wanting to make a deal will cost our Country more money than the Border Wall we are all talking about.

He promised to keep fighting for wall funding. Border patrol agents - along with other Department of Homeland Security personnel - are among those working without pay.

Trump said Tuesday that the closed parts of the government will remain that way until Democrats agree to wall off the U.S. -Mexico border to deter criminal elements.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer of NY on Saturday said funding for Trump's wall will "never pass the Senate".

"I can't tell you when the government's going to be open. But it's all the same thing", he said of Democrats' preference to give him federal monies for border "fencing" rather than the concrete and steel wall on which he campaigned so hard in 2016.

On Christmas Eve, President Trump and his wife, first lady Melania Trump, fielded phone calls from children who had called the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) to check on Santa Claus's progress.

But Randy Erwin, national president of the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE), staunchly disagrees with that assertion.

More than 400,000 federal employees deemed "essential" are expected to continue to work through the shutdown, to ensure that critical operations in government proceed. Some 800,000 federal workers must work without pay for the time being, or stay home and wait to be paid later.

"We represent many workers making salaries in the high 20s to low 40s". "It absolutely ruined the holidays for hundreds of thousands of federal employees".

A new Treasury Employees Union survey also showed that almost 80% of its members are "very concerned" about paying for their basic living expenses this month, and even more are tightening their belts as they worry about delayed or lost pay, the union said. Democrats say a physical barrier would be expensive and ineffective. "And once I fired him, everybody said, 'Oh, why did you fire him?"

"The president wanted the shutdown, but seems not to know how to get himself out of it", Senator Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and incoming House speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote in a joint statement.

"It makes people feel really disrespected".

Just what does Trump want, and what might he be willing to accept? They are bad people.
