3-year-old boy goes missing from grandmother's backyard

A 3-year-old boy who vanished while playing in his grandmother's backyard in North Carolina has been found after two days, authorities have said.

Lynch says Casey is with his family and being evaluated at a hospital.

Hathaway's family noticed he was missing Tuesday when he didn't come inside his grandmother's home after playing outside with two other kids.

Temperatures are expected to fall to near freezing Thursday in the area near where Casey disappeared, Hughes said, creating concern for authorities, who already are facing rugged, hard terrain. Volunteers were sent home for the night due to safety concerns. "Areas are flooded and filled with sinkholes, even the trained searchers are having trouble navigating safely", the office told USA Today.

Casey was found by professional search and rescue crews on Thursday night.

He had been missing for about 45 minutes when his grandmother called 911, and emergency officials responded to the house within minutes. Volunteers should meet at the staging area at 8:00 tomorrow morning at New Haven Church located at 2755 Aurora Road, Ernul, North Carolina. "Some places it wasn't that thick, but we took our time and you see the next person, and you look and you look and you look".

"Little fellow is happy, and his parents are very happy as well".

"Our number one priority is to find Casey", Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughes told reporters Wednesday.

"As soon as the deputy stepped out, he heard Casey asking for his mother", Hughes said.

"We went through the woods - through the thicket and the briars", volunteer Donna Harris told WTVD.

'The terrain was woods.

"He hasn't said a whole lot, except when his little sister came in there he really brightened up then", Hughes said.

"At no time did we see any indications of an abduction", he said, which is why an Amber Alert wasn't issued. Anyone with information that could aid in locating Casey is asked to call the tip line at 252-636-6703, the Craven County Sheriff's office at 252-633-0498, or the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation at 919-662-4500.
