Kamala Harris Announces Presidential Run

Kamala Harris Announces Presidential Run

First-term Democratic Senator Kamala Harris of California, a rising party star and outspoken critic of President Donald Trump's immigration policies, launched her 2020 campaign for the White House on Monday by touting her background as a prosecutor.

California Senator Kamala Harris has announced her candidacy for president with a pledge to "bring our voices together". "So today, the day we celebrate Dr. King, is a very special day for all of us as Americans and I'm honored to be able to make my announcement on the day we commemorate him".

Harris, the former attorney general of California, has chosen a red and yellow design for her logo that resembles the campaign buttons used five decades ago by Chisholm, the first black woman elected to Congress.

She is also the first African-American candidate to enter the race, and her campaign rollout speaks to that significance: Her announcement comes on Martin Luther King Jr.

"We are the best of who we are when we fight to achieve these ideals", she said on ABC. "I feel a sense of responsibility to stand up and fight for the best of our country". When she was elected attorney general of California in 2010, she became the state's first female, the first African-American and first Asian-American to hold the position. "It is probably one of the things that motivates me more than anything else", she said.

That has been a constant theme of her appearances over the past year on her book tour, and in early-voting states like Iowa and SC, where she will campaign on Friday. "For ourselves, for our children, and for our country", Harris declares in a campaign video shared on social media and posted to her campaign website at KamalaHarris.org.

Harris' campaign will be headquartered in Baltimore - giving aides an East Coast hub in a racially diverse city that has struggled with wide income disparities - and Oakland, where Harris was born to immigrant parents who came to the United States to advance their academic careers.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has begun laying most of the groundwork for a 2020 presidential campaign.

Her first campaign stop will be on Friday in Columbia, South Carolina, a Harris aide said, while revealing some early hires Monday. I'm running to lift those voices.

"She was a good person", said former classmate Dean Smith.

Harris has consistently supported LGBTQ rights throughout her career.

While Harris was born in Oakland, the city still seems an odd choice for a first speech. It will be led by Juan Rodriguez, who was the campaign manager of her 2016 Senate campaign and was also a senior adviser to California Governor Gavin Newsom's campaign.

"I had a host of clients that I was obligated to defend and represent", Harris said of being California's attorney general.

Harris will host an official campaign kickoff rally in Oakland, California, on January 27. His presence at a Columbia church service Monday and a rally after, as well as several other events in the state, signaled that he plans to redouble efforts in SC should he launch a second White House bid in 2020.
