Roger Federer beats Serena Williams in battle of the tennis legends

Roger Federer beats Serena Williams in battle of the tennis legends

According to BBC, Switzerland, who won the cup a year ago, will play Greece on Thursday in their final round-robin match, and the US will take on Great Britain.

In the biggest mixed doubles drawcard in the 31-year history of the tournament, in what is expected to be its final edition, Federer teamed with Belinda Bencic to win the match in straight sets under the Fast4 format and win the Group B tie for Switzerland.

The match has been compared to the 1973 exhibition match known as Battle of the Sexes, where Billie Jean King roundly beat Bobby Riggs.

Federer also posted the image, writing, "Oh what a night", alongside the tennis ball and fire emojis.

"I really enjoyed playing against Serena, what an honour and pleasure", he said.

Serena Williams and Roger Federer have been on the global tennis circuit for decades - both are 37 years old - and they have won 43 Grand Slam titles between them.

'Great champion, you can see how determined and focused she is - I love that about her'.

"It was a great experience, I'm sad it is over I was just warming up", she joked. "This is super cool that we get to do it at such a pinnacle point of our careers", she said.

Serena also had not doubt as to the status of the 20 grand slams victor.

"The guy is great, he's the greatest of all time both on and off the court, he has such charisma".

I think I understand my body very well. He has a killer serve, - literally, you can't read it. "I watched him all the time and I never knew how unbelievable it was".

Federer and his playing partner Belinda Bencic are set to face Williams and her partner Frances Tiafoe in what is quickly becoming the most anticipated match of the New Year when the two teams face off on Tuesday.

Williams started fast in the women's singles against Bencic - with an early break to storm to a 3-0 lead - before an error-strewn performance ensued as Bencic recovered to win the opener.

Federer faced three break points in his first service game, but was near ideal from that point on as he wrapped up the contest in 57 minutes at RAC Arena on Sunday night.
