A spokesman for Chanel was not immediately available for comment.

The 85-year-old fashion designer died on Tuesday, February 19th, French magazine Closer reports.

The brand's CEO, Alain Wertheimer, praised Lagerfeld for an "exceptional intuition" that was ahead of his time and contributed to Chanel's global success. "Join a nunnery, there'll always be a place for you in the convent".

Friends had always said that the creator would die with a pencil in his hand, and just last week his own fashion line Karl Lagerfeld was still announcing new design collaborations.

Recognizable for his high-collared shirts, white ponytail, dark sunglasses and black fingerless gloves, Lagerfeld had a client list that featured stars of the stage and screen, including actresses Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett and the singer Pharrell Williams.

One of the most iconic names in fashion has passed away, and we're taking a look back at Karl Lagerfeld's famous designs worn by celebrities like Kendall Jenner and many more. I know someone in Germany who took a young Syrian and after four days said: "'The greatest thing Germany invented was the Holocaust'". I also still blush at the humiliation of having asked Karl Lagerfeld, in his suite at the Mercer Hotel, if he liked ice cream.

Lagerfeld also designed collections for his own brand.

'So incredibly sad to hear this, ' Victoria Beckham wrote. "Karl was brilliant, he was wicked, he was amusing, he was generous beyond measure, and he was deeply kind". We have lost a true genius in the fashion world.

Karl Lagerfeld had been at the creative helm of Chanel since 1983 and had been designing for Fendi since 1965.

"My problem as a child was that I was bored to death because I wanted to be a grown-up person", he said in a 2011 interview with the U.K.'s Independent newspaper.

The influential German designer is best known for his work with the French luxury fashion house, along with his prodigious output.

A craftsman who combined artistic instinct, business acumen and commensurate ego, Lagerfeld was known for his strikingly visual fashion show displays.

A weight-loss book he published in 2005 - "The Karl Lagerfeld Diet" - consolidated his status as a pop culture icon. Thank goodness for it. People need relief or they become murderers."-Vogue".

Gigi chimed in: "Karl, I will miss your indescribable presence, watching your calm, quiet, genius mind working, your little jokes, awesome stories, and experiencing the clothes, sets, and productions only you could dream up".
