Defending champ Naomi Osaka wins Indian Wells opener

Indian qualifier Prajnesh Gunneswaran achieved the biggest win of his career when he stunningly knocked world number 18 Nikoloz Basilashvili out of 6-4, 6 (6)-7, 7-6 (4) continuing his dream run.

It was a 6-3, 6-4 victory for the top-seeded Japanese at the Indian Wells 2019 and her success was rejoiced by the freezing ambience of the Californian Tennis Paradise. Nadal is a much stronger player and the Spaniard seems too good for Schwartzman every time they meet.

"The last time I played her I lost so anything is a bonus after that", said Osaka, who won the U.S. Open.

She booked a third-round clash with fellow American Christina McHale, a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victor over 30th-seed Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Nadal, playing his third tournament of a year that started with a crushing loss to Djokovic in the Australian Open final and included an early exit in Acapulco, converted five of his six break chances against Donaldson and never faced a break point himself.

"I had to undergo surgery and a lot of things happened".

"I think I was missing something to be able to play at this level". I think she had a few tight points, and here we are.

Federer immediately broke back before later benefiting from an untimely double fault for another break and serving out for victory in just over an hour and a quarter.

On Sunday, Serena Williams returns to take on Garbine Muguruza in the headline match as the third round gets underway.

Playing for the first time since her third-round defeat to Simona Halep at the Australian Open, Williams needed nearly two hours to see off the German.

Though Kvitova posted more winners in contrast to Williams (38 to 15), she also registered double of the unforced errors made by the seven-time major champion (56 to 25). I was kind of waiting for him to do something with the ball rather than doing it myself.

"It was such a weird match", Kvitova said, calling it her worst of the year. We are in a very interesting time where we need to have a clear plan and I'm not sure what the plan is.

Dusk was arriving in the California desert when Williams and Kvitova departed the court.

Pliskova served 12 aces on her way to a 6-7 (4-7) 6-1 6-1 victory over qualifier Misaki Doi.

Kyrgios will take on Philipp Kohlschreiber in the second round after the German veteran dispatched France's Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-4, 6-0.

Kerber, the eighth seed, progressed impressively, dismantling Yulia Putintseva 6-0 6-2 in just over an hour.
