Local authorities alleged Smollett sent the threat to himself, and when it failed to generate enough publicity, he hired two acquaintances to "attack" him.

Taraji P. Henson is thrilled "the truth has finally been set free" in the Jussie Smollet case.

The actor had initially been charged because it was believed that he lied about being the victim of a hate crime on the streets of Chicago.

"I have been truthful and consistent on every single level since day one", Smollett, who is black and gay, said at a brief news conference.

Tuesday evening, just hours after learning of the State's Attorney's decision, the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) issued a second letter to the United States Attorney's office in Chicago, calling for a Federal investigation into Kim Foxx's office, and suggesting that something odd is happening among Chicago's prosecutors.

The Chicago Police Department has released 61 pages of investigative case files related to the Jussie Smollett incident, following a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request from CWB Chicago.

With little explanation, authorities abandoned the criminal case after only five weeks.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the dropping of the charges was a "whitewash of justice". "I think the way that it happened so quickly, people were taken aback by; but if we look at other disorderly conduct cases, and we look at how those cases were handled by our office, this outcome was not unexpected".

In a surprise hearing Tuesday, Joe Magats, the first assistant state's attorney in Cook County, Illinois, announced he made a decision to drop charges against Smollett.

A third Osundario brother spoke out Wednesday on the Jussie Smollett case after a local television reporter tracked him down.

"They chose to hide behind secrecy and broker a deal to circumvent the judicial system", he said.

Smollett said the letter contained a violent threat and homophobic slur€ in cutout magazine letters with a drawing of a crude stick figure hanging from a tree.

"It started by them having a relationship with Mr. Smollett".

'I'm completely confused. I don't understand. "Why are we so easy to believe strangers over people we know?"

"Exoneration means there was a finding of factual innocence and usually that's done after a hearing in front of a judge with the victims and the witnesses", she explains.

Days before the assault, Smollett allegedly tried to gain attention by sending a false letter to the set of his show. Upon news that had been named a suspect in the hate crime attack investigation back in February, Empire removed him from the last two episodes of its fifth season.

After a public records request, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that Tina Tchen, a Smollett-supporting attorney and ex-chief of staff for former first lady Michelle Obama, emailed and texted the state's attorney encouraging her to push for the hate crime case to go to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Instead, the 32-year-old who plays Chicken on the hit Fox series wanted to focus on Smollett getting back to work.
