Oculus Rift S headset announced with higher-res OLED displays

Oculus Rift S headset announced with higher-res OLED displays

The new Rift hits this spring for $399, Oculus announced Wednesday.

As for hardware requirements, Oculus says you'll need at least an Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 470 and an Intel Core i3-6100 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200 / FX4350 although a 1060 / RX 480 and Core i5-4590 / Ryzen 5 1500X is recommended. From the description in the review it seems they have done so very successfully, with location tracking improving as opposed to degrading due to that change. You're still getting the same Oculus Touch controllers that ship with the original model, allowing you to dive right into games and creative apps right out of the box.

While the Oculus Quest was announced a year ago, it's going on sale at the same time as the Oculus Rift S: "spring 2019" according to Oculus.

Oculus are also promising improved light blocking with the Rift S, courtesy of their partnership with Lenovo, who helped design the headset for increased comfort and better weight distribution.

Both the Oculus Rift and Oculus Rift S will rely on the Rift platform. The Rift S is the successor to the original Rift VR headset and joins the Oculus Go in the company's product line-up. The new Oculus Rift S features an inside-out tracking which eliminates the need for any external sensors.

The Oculus Rift S is co-designed with Lenovo and features the Oculus Insight technology used in the Oculus Quest.

Individual eye lenses get a boost from 1,080 x 1,200 pixels to 1,280 x 1,440 pixels compared with the original Rift.

The budget Oculus Go is sticking around for now, though it's being framed as a more basic VR content viewer than a serious gaming device.

The latest Rift sports five onboard sensors, which are built to make this seamless tracking setup as accurate as possible. Highlights of the upcoming Oculus Rift S, which requires a tethered PC for processing power, include its higher resolutions screens, and its inside-out tracking. The display panel offers a resolution of 2560x1440 (1280x1440 per eye) with a refresh rate of 80Hz. It doesn't come with on-ear headphones, however. Will you be swayed by the Rift S? .
