Rockies' Nolan Arenado says 'my heart was here' after $260M deal

Just a month ago, the Rockies and Arenado agreed to avoid arbitration with a record setting $26 million deal for this upcoming season.

Machado only recently found a home, agreeing to a 10-year, $300 million deal with the San Diego Padres.

All offseason fans, beat writers, Major League Baseball analysts, and even other players have speculated about where Bryce Harper will sign, and for how much.

The Yankees were believed to be strong suitors for Arenado if the 27-year-old hit the market next season.

"Manny is a little bit younger than Nolan, so Nolan knew he wouldn't get as many years, but I think what Manny did was set the parameters there and certainly the Rockies feel really good about Nolan and feel better about him, frankly, than anyone else would feel about Machado at this point".

Arenado's deal has a $32.5 million average annual value, second behind the $34.42 million for pitcher Zack Greinke in a $206.5 million contract with Arizona that began in 2016.

The Rockies are trending upward after making the playoffs in back-to-back seasons, a franchise first.

Arenado may have been prompted to re-sign with the Rockies in part by the recent trajectory and uncertain future of free agency in baseball - the source of much of the recent animosity between players and owners. Colorado then beat the Chicago Cubs in the Wild Card game, before being swept in three games by the Milwaukee Brewers.

In 2018, Arenado batted.297 with an NL-leading 38 homers last season, finishing third in MVP voting.

"He's their player, they came up with the money, and he got some terms that he liked", Harding said. The team also announced a three-year contract extension for manager Bud Black through 2022.

Arenado is one of the best all-around players in baseball, a four-time all-star and six-time Gold Glove victor who is the face of a Rockies franchise that has earned a wild-card playoff berth in each of the past two seasons. Beyond that grouping, veteran Daniel Murphy signed a two-year contract to play first base this winter and will be entrenched in the heart of what should be a formidable batting order. "I never have", Arenado said.
