Liverpool forward Sadio Mane makes PFA Team of the Year

Van Dijk has been widely credited with providing the foundation - alongside another recent addition Alisson Becker - for the team's success this season, which has seen them continue to fight neck-and-neck for the title with Manchester City, as well as reach the Champions League semi-finals for the second consecutive season.

There's no doubt that in the past year and a half Virgil van Dijk has helped completely transform the Liverpool defence.

But The Mirror report that it's Van Dijk who has won over his peers, seeing off competition from teammate Sadio Mane, Chelsea's Eden Hazard and Manchester City duo Sergio Aguero and Bernardo Silva.

The Reds have only lost one Premier League fixture this term with Virgil Van Dijk in action, and have let in 20 goals which is the least number in the English topflight.

The Teranga Lions' star is also in contention for the PFA Player of the Year award with the victor set to be announced at a ceremony on Sunday.

Earlier this month, Van Dijk revealed that he voted for Sterling to win the award.

With suggestions that Van Dijk will be the man holding the award in a couple of days time, it appears his view isn't shared by a majority of Premier League players.

Van Dijk didn't have the disadvantage of playing in the World Cup, which is exhausting and very hard the following season.

The official announcement won't be until Thursday with the PFA Awards ceremony taking place at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Sunday evening.

The PFA's rules state that to qualify for Young Player of the Year, a player must be no older than 23 years old at the start of the season.
