Mall of America: Boy, 5, thrown from balcony by stranger in Minneapolis

Police were called to the World of America mall in Bloomington after witnesses reported an unidentified man either throwing or pushing the young child from the height, before trying to flee.

Witnesses said the child was his mum when he was snatched - being either thrown or pushed from the third floor in an apparently random attack.

Police say the suspect apparently does not know the victim or the victim's family.

Detectives are also also working with the mall to determine if there is any surveillance video.

Police don't have an idea about possible motive, Potts said.

Tina Hailey of Burnsville was walking with her husband and had just rounded the corner on the mall's first floor near Macy's when she heard screams. The charges state he threw a drinking glass at a customer at Twin City Grill in the Mall of America. Potts said police managed to apprehend the suspect inside the mall and they do not believe there is a threat to the public. The child had fallen from the third level to the first.

Per CNN, Potts said, "The child did suffer significant injuries".

Metro Transit stopped Blue Line light rail service in and out of the mall around 11 a.m. due to the police activity.

"This was a senseless act and words can not truly express our profound shock and sadness". Our immediate and only concern is for the wellbeing of the family and the child, as well as for any individuals who may have witnessed the incident.

According to Minnesota court records, Aranda has been convicted of interfering with a police officer, trespassing and fifth-degree assault - all misdemeanors - and felony first-degree damage to property. "We have counseling services available for anyone who may need assistance", the statement continues. Mall Security responded immediately as well as the Bloomington Police Department.
