Next-gen Switch isn't happening, sources at Nintendo say

Nintendo says popular Switch software included "Super Smash Bros".

For the fiscal year, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the best-selling Switch title with lifetime sales of 16.69 million units sold, taking the crown from last year's Super Mario Odyssey, which is now the second best-selling Switch game with 14.44 million units sold. In a new report focusing on the company's continued success, Bloomberg cites people familiar with Nintendo's plans that believe "a new, cheaper version of the Switch" will be on store shelves by the end of June. That's just short of Nintendo's revised sales target of 17 million units, but a far cry from the company's initial goal of 20 million units.

Yet another source claims that Nintendo will launch a cheaper Switch model this summer.

The total number of million-seller titles during this fiscal year is now 23.

In terms of hardware, there wasn't a huge budge from the January report, as the Switch went from 32.27 million units sold to 34.74, but that does mean it's finally surpassed the Nintendo 64's 32.93 million units.

The company also sold 5.95 million units of the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition and Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition.

Lifetime sales for Mario Kart 7 are now at 18.26 million units compared to last year's 17.04 million. Instead Nintendo will provide smaller upgrades to the existing Switch model. A second pro model is also slated for release some time this year.

Nintendo has yet to confirm or deny those rumored new versions of Switch, but its president has said outright that it won't announce new hardware at E3 2019.

"As a general rule, we're always working on new hardware and we will announce it when we are able to sell it", Furukawa told reporters in Osaka. With the 3DS seemingly nearing the end of its life span, the Switch could replace it altogether.
