Trump fires Secret Service chief

His appointment was set to fulfill the recommendations of a group of former senior government officials that reviewed the Secret Service in 2014 and found that it was an "insular agency" in need of an outsider to lead it.

"United States Secret Service director Randolph "Tex" Alles has done a great job at the agency over the last two years, and the President is thankful for his over 40 years of service to the country", White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a brief statement Monday.

Nielsen and President Trump met at the White House on Sunday - after which the president announced that Nielsen would leave her post as head of DHS.

The departure of Alles follows the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, and Trump's decision to withdraw Ronald Vitiello, his nominee to head Immigration and Customs Enforcement, in favor of someone "tougher".

CNN is reporting this afternoon that Secret Service officials found out about the director being removed... from CNN.

"There is a near-systematic purge happening at the nation's second-largest national security agency", a senior administration official told CNN.

She said that Trump has picked career Secret Service member James M. Murray to take over the agency in May.

Alles reportedly was told to pack it in before the March 30 security breach at Mar-a-Lago, in which a Chinese woman with a flash drive containing malware and four cellphones bluffed her way into Trump's posh resort. "Very happy with them". Trump also announced that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Kevin McAleenan would be appointed as acting DHS secretary.

NBC News also reported that there could be additional ousters, but did not confirm which officials could be fired.

"United States Citizenship and Immigration Services director Francis Cissna and Office of the General Counsel's John Mitnick are expected to be gone soon, and the White House is eyeing others to be removed".

Alles had been told Trump was preparing to make changes in leadership throughout the Department of Homeland Security, which includes oversight of the Secret Service. This access does not afford an individual proximity to the President or other Secret Service protectees.
